New Top Class Resorts in Maldives

Good luck. Hopefully somebody can give you some information. After an admittedly cursory review of the websites for these places I%26#39;m not sure that ANY of them are actually open yet. Much of the website material seems to be made up of artists renderings of what the resorts will look like and flowery marketing verbage along with promises of ';Spring 09'; or ';Summer 09'; openings. For those of us who have followed the rollout of new or refurbished properties in the Maldives the concept of a resort actually opening on schedule is about as likely as a pod of whale sharks leaping over the bow of your snorkel dhoni doing flipper impressions (smiles).

Also after looking at the projected price lists for these properties I have my doubts that they would be something most of the regular contibutors on this forum will find very inviting. To be honest these places simply P**S me off for the simple reason that they are exactly the kind of wannabe 5* overpriced ';chic'; resorts that are contributing to raising the tide of pricing for all resorts in the Maldives. Obviously the MBA bean counter types who are behind these places think of themselves as pretty smart (and maybe they are). Perhaps there IS indeed a never ending supply of rich people out there who want to pay $1800 a night for a ';hotel room';. Personally I think that the folks who put these resorts together are going to be in for a big surprise trying to market these places in the present world economy. But we will see. Good luck. Hope somebody else can help you out.

Ditto.

As for the plus and minus ....

it depends on your point of view. Probably all the rooms will have pools, which I view as a minus as they really have no place in the Maldives and waste energy in desalinating water which causes pollution, unless any of them are going to have all solar energy. You may see this as a plus.

They will probably all have butlers, some of them will have two, which I see as a nightmare but you may like people following you around trying to do things for you. A roomboy always sufficed for me.

They will probably all have state of the art audio/visual equipment which I see as a minus but you may see as a plus.

The rooms will be ridiculously large for a hotel room where you are coming with a suitcase or two rather than all your worldly goods, and will spend little time in. If you plan to spend a LOT of time in your room then you might as well stay in a luxury hotel in your hometown and save the time and money of the journey. You are planning to come in the summer for 3 or 4 weeks and come from Italy so I expect the weather will be as good at home, maybe better since it is officially the rainy season in the Maldives.

The resorts will probably have lots of bars and restaurants and I regard this as a minus, although you will probably regard it as a plus.

Each of those restaurants will serve arty overpriced food sourced from all over the world at great monetary and environmental expense which I regard as a minus but you probably regard as a plus.

Different people like different things so one person%26#39;s idea of the ';best'; is someone else%26#39;s idea of the worst.

As Skibum says, there%26#39;s no evidence that they are open, resorts regularly open a year or more later than advertised and generally are best avoided for at least six months after the do open.

Thanks! i actually saw that most of them were supposed to open summer 2008...so, as you say, they are actually in delay.

Indeed they priced resorts...i%26#39;m new here so i do not have figurate a profile of the regular contributors of this forum, but i noticed that there are tons of reviews about top luxury hotel worldwide; maybe they write reviews but they do not participate at the forum.

I do not know how much they will affect the general pricing strategy of the maldives resort...probably you have a point there and I must say that i agree with you, i%26#39;m impressed how many new luxury resort are coming out...that%26#39;s actually one of the reason behind mi decision to edit this thread

and yes, you are right again, there are going to be (if i%26#39;m not wrong) almost 10 five star luxury and almost 20 five star resort in maldives... need lot of money to keep them alive...but maybe that can create competition and they will lower the price...that will be nice.

Thank you again,

best

Nakatcha,

i believe it is quite easy to understand what kind of information i%26#39;m looking for....but i%26#39;m glad this thread gave you the possibilities to express your opinion on five star resorts.

Hi,

I checked whatever I could found on these new resorts.

This is my opinion for what it%26#39;s worth.

The Beach House Collection

To many different kind of villas and to expensive.

Alila Villas Hadahaa only 50 villas

No price availlable yet but one way or another I like what I see.

Shangri La: very green island with lots of trees and treehouses. Unique in the Maldives. To soon to find enough information but if there are not to many villas (I don%26#39;t like big resorts and I%26#39;m an absolute Mirihi fan) I may give it a try.

Constance Halaveli. To many villas for my liking but quite cheap for what they promiss.

Phil.... unfotunately, Shangri La seems to be one of the biggest resort in Maldives...

Alila is marketing for the open villas with pool at 900 USDollar and they do stay seven pay four....

what i would like to know is if they propose a different concept, how do they profile themself compared to other...

for example Six Senses has a very appealing marketing proposition..... quite diverse from other luxury resort

thanks!

It%26#39;s not my opinion of ';five star hotels'; - just the recent hotel developments in the Maldives - falling over themselves to provide tricks and servants doesn%26#39;t to me mean they%26#39;re any better than five star resorts without, of which there were many. They have now felt the need to provide all the extras that weren%26#39;t needed in order to keep up. If they%26#39;d stayed as they were, they would have been cleaning up now, having the luxury without the impossible for most price tags.

Won%26#39;t affect you since clearly you are loaded. :-)

ER .. i can%26#39;t speak for nakatcha but i do believe her opinions were based on the type of resort , not the number of stars .

i very , very happily frequent a 5 star island myself .. but should i feel the desire to explore a different place , i will not book a place with pool as its too large and pools attract children .. tv%26#39;s because i go to relax and get away from the real world - no matter how flat the screen is , i won%26#39;t be impressed .. a butler that is attached to my heels, as i value my privacy ... a multitude of bars and restaurants as that would mean the island is much too large. i don%26#39;t consider an island shared with hundreds of other people to be ';exclusive'; , no matter the price - a crowd is not exclusive in my opinion .. staff that come running up on the beach to wipe my sunglasses - i don%26#39;t consider that luxury but simply another body crowding the beach :)

so.. my point is that this is not a forum full of poor people as much as many contributers have visited a number of maldive islands and we have had ample opportunity to shape our preferences and for a good number of us , that preference goes towards the small islands. oddly enough , i don%26#39;t see places like ';W'; having many repeater guests , while small 5 star places like mirihi have more ';regulars'; than new guests at any given time.

i can honestly say that i don%26#39;t envy the brand chasers. money/price has nothing to do with that... but obviously , tastes vary and that is a good thing, or else we%26#39;d all be trying to visit the same island :)

hehe .. nakatcha beat me to it .. thats what i get for my slooooow typing :)
