Fruit bats on Mirihi

Going to Mirihi in May and the main enjoyment for me of a holiday is the animal/fish life. Can anyone confirm if there are fruit bats on Mirihi and are the cats still there - I hope so... lol. Also does anyone know if whale shark/manta sightings are seasonal and the chances of a sighting in May near Mirihi?

Thanks

Pipling,

There are Fruit bats on all the islands, and they forage across the islands, Poss OK for Mantas however Whale sharks could be a long shot.

Might be a bit late for whale sharks.. If they are still out there you can count on the island to have whale shark snorkel trips via boats. Think they are down to one cat now. You still may see manta%26#39;s and the occasional dolphin out in the ocean in front of the restaurant during breakfast time.

Are these friut bats harmless? I was looking on you tube they look quite scary!

Blood sucking vampire like creatures who steal little children in the night! Nobody should set foot on Mirihi until the place is rid of these horrible creatures!

Ok why do you suppose that people call them ';fruit bats'; (although I have heard them called ';fox bats'; because of the shape of their heads). THEY EAT FRUIT! Hopefully people will only read the first two sentences and NOT go to MIRIHI. I think I was responsible for initially starting the praise singing on this forum for this place and now it%26#39;s become so popular I have a hard time getting a reservation. Boy was that a mistake!

PK,

NOTHING TO WORRY RE fruit bats --get get more trouble from skidbum-lol lol, the bats are large and most of the time its something that just catches your eye flapping over, they are large 1 mtr wing span ish, but if they hang in the trees try to get a close they are cute.

I know im sure it will be ok. Its just my fiance she hates things like that!

Hi PK17

Mrs Dibble is terrified of bats. Doesn%26#39;t even like me using the word.

However, when we were on Athuruga last December, there were loads of large bats hanging around in the trees. After a while, Mrs D got quite used to them and would happily sit underneath the large banyan tree they frequented and watch them.

They really are quite cute. The have little ';foxy'; faces and are often called Flying Foxes for that reason. They are completely harmless and will not suck your blood!

....';happily sit underneath the large banyan tree they frequented and watch them'; ....

OD ... I really think you need to warn Mrs OD of the peril of sitting underneath anything that the bats frequent .... could be quite unpleasant!! .....

We were never directly in guano range...but good point nevertheless!

Fruit bats are not a problem. We have encountered them on a number of Islands. It is fascinating to watch them come in at dusk to roost and they do not bother anyone. After all they were there before the tourists so probably have more claim to it! Pompey for the Cup (but not this year!)
