Things To See In Male

Hi, I%26#39;ll have almost a day in Male before my flight out late night. I%26#39;m coming in from Club Med Kani in the evening the night before.

What are the recommended sights and can%26#39;t miss items in Male? How is the best way to spend almost a full day there?

Thanks :)

Things To See In Male

Hi Pinkella,

There is not a lot to do on Male and what there is --Can be done in about 4 hours--The fish market Whoopie--The Mosque the Gardens, the high rise flats, the boats coming in and out, the tourist shops selling tourist tat.

Thats about it.

It depends where you are staying, the airport hotel has a pool and bars, so i would try to catch some ZZZZs before the long flight.

    Hey Rex,

Just wondering how your stay in Mirihi was? :)

    Rex!

So am I. I realise it must be a pain getting the laptop out though when I%26#39;m sure there are far more interesting things to do!

    Rex!

I%26#39;m so glad that you had a good trip. Makes me anticipate my own next visit to that lovely place even more!

Great to ';hear'; you Rex!! and glad you had a fantastic holiday.

We had the most amazing time in Vietnam and Cambodia, but missed the clear seas of the Maldives when we stayed on Phu Quoc Island, but there were loads of other things to do and see.

Just keep posting Mate, and hopefully the saddo who keep getting you deleted somehow gets finally zapped themselves!!!

    Goodbye ex rexAllover ,

    TA Mods!

Can we get anymore childish with these post deletions? Once again we have a user providing current information about a visit to a popular Maldives resort and you basically make the thread worthless by deleting the post that has the information. You might as well just delete the whole thread.

User provides useful info about a resort in the Maldives....you guys delete it...funny I thought the point of this forum was to provide a source of information. That doesn%26#39;t work very well when you are constantly deleting posts by the people providing the source of information.

..........OH YES....!! here here skibum,,,, i was particularly wanting to read Rex%26#39;s review re mirihi island, and because of %26#39;someone%26#39; deleting any single one of his posts, for whatever reason! Tipping in the Maldives - Whats the score ???

    Hi

Can anyone give me an idea on the Tipping practices in the Maldives (Sun Island Resort is our destination in 2 weeks time) We%26#39;re on an All Inc. deal and unsure how much physical cash $$$%26#39;s to take with us. I%26#39;ve heard that the locals don%26#39;t particularly have the same tipping expectancy that lets say, we%26#39;ve experienced in the US, but I understand that its fair practice. Don%26#39;t want to embarrass ourselves by appearing miserly, but don%26#39;t wish to go overboard either, just %26#39;oil the wheels%26#39; of service.

Any tips on tipping - whether its best to tip at the 鈥榩oint of service鈥?or is it more appropriate or at the end of meal/week/stay etc.

Plus what%26#39;s a fair tip in $%26#39;s (per round of drinks with meals, at the bar, room boy, luggage porter etc.etc.) so that we can relax %26amp; enjoy to the full.

    Hope someone can help.

    Many Thanks

Tipping in the Maldives - Whats the score ???

from what i%26#39;ve read its about $2 per suitcase, $10-15 for room boy and waiter at the end of the week and the odd few $s for the bar man during your stay..

Tipping in the Maldives - Whats the score ???

    Hi Andy

There are quite alot of posts on this.

If you do a search for tipping you will get all your answers.

    rgds

    Freddie

    Hi Andy,

There is no hard and fast rule as such, and your thread contains all the answers you are likely to get, if that makes sense.

The long standing tradition is to tip once per week to waiter(s) / room boy / Bar staff and anyone who goes out of their way to serve you.

Islands differ in their expectancy levels and what is a good level to one person is not to another (example, one guy I know who went to Meeru tipped the garden sweeper $50 for sweeping the leaves outside his room!!)

Some other people will say tip after each meal?? I personally tip on a weekly basis and the level of service I ahve received has always been excellent - If you are rude then dont expect to be served well etc etc - the following:-

Room Boy $20 / Waiter $20 / Bar staff (either head barman or tip box $10 / Restaurant Cooks $10 / Boat crew $20 (this depends on if you are diving much) and anyone else if they stand out from the crowd.

    Hope this helps.

South Male to Rangali by boat?

    Hello,

I am staying at the Conrad on Rangali and was wondering if there is a cheaper option of getting there besides the $US395 rtn seaplane fare?

    Many thanks,

    Simon

South Male to Rangali by boat?

    You could swim?

Seriously, the island is about 100km from Male and there are no ferries or any public transportation. The only other option would be to rent a boat but that would be way more expensive than the seaplane.

South Male to Rangali by boat?

kanthony is of course completely right .. i am sure that for a price , the conrad would be willing to fetch you by yacht .. but the only way you%26#39;ll get there more cheaply would be if you set sail on an air mattress .

having to suppress a smile when a conrad guest is looking for ways to save a buck :)

If i were you i would just pay the price as the flight to Rangali is spectacular and not worth missing.

    Mauritius Honeymoon

Mauritius is usually twinned with the Seychelles. I don%26#39;t think there are flights between Mauritius and the Maldives and you wouldn%26#39;t be wanting a boat transfer!!

You%26#39;d be better off on the Mauritius forum, unless you change your honeymoon to the Maldives + another destination, in which case you could do Sri Lanka. Some people like Dubai.

  • Snorkelling/Diving on Kurumba

    Hi there people!

My fiance and I have just booked our honeymoon to Dubai %26amp; Maldives in July/Aug. We%26#39;ll be staying in Kurumba in a beach bungalow. I really want to go snorkelling and/or diving because the pictures of marine life look amazing and I want to experience it first hand. However, I%26#39;ve never been snorkelling or diving before and am a little nervous about it. My fiance doesn%26#39;t know how to swim so I don%26#39;t think he%26#39;ll be allowed to snorkel or dive will he?

Do Kurumba have any facilities for complete beginners?

    Snorkelling/Diving on Kurumba

first off .. i have not been to kurumba, due to its location but experienced divers who have stayed there praise the dive center quite highly .

the need to be able to swim for snorkeling is pretty self evident .

the dive center will be happy to take a beginner into the open water class but i would not expect that to extend to someone that can%26#39;t swim . swimming is a requirement for diving.

i suggest that you start the dive course at home as a referral program , so you can get the classroom time and theory out of the way before you go . no need to spend your honeymoon studying .

you should also buy your snorkel gear at home from a good dive store (not a general sports store) . knowledgeable staff will be happy to help you select gear that fits and works for beginners , as well as giving you helpful tips. - probably whatever padi center startsd you out on the referral course will have a dive store attached.

even if you don%26#39;t do any pool dives but wait for the honeymoon to complete your scuba course, you should be testing your new snorkel gear at a pool at home to make sure you are completely comfortable with it before trying it in an ocean with waves , etc.

    Snorkelling/Diving on Kurumba

    Hi

I agree with everything spammie has said, your fiance could learn to swim before he goes and wear a life vest for snorkelling, you can either take your own again a good dive shop will advise you or hire one when on the island,it%26#39;s a shame for him to miss out as the underwater world is an amazing place

    regards susie

thanks, Bernese - i totally forgot about the option of wearing a vest for snorkeling .. slapping my forehead here .. lol .

however , i would think the fiance should at least be comfortable in the water , even if he is still a swimming newbie at the time of the honeymoon .. or else even a slight current or some waves can really ruin his experience .

Hi Choolio, i%26#39;ve been to Kurumba and the beach is absolutely perfect for learning to snorkel. We introduced a nervous indian couple to snorkelling on Kurumba (the male couldn%26#39;t swim) by letting them borrow our snorkel and masks and they practiced in the shallow soft sand round Kurumba which was perfect. Yes, the dive centre will give lessons which I can recommend. Even though your fiance doesn%26#39;t swim he can still put his face in the shallows and soon he will be swimming, you just watch! Just hire a snorkel and mask for a day initially with a lesson and then you can practice on your own in your own time. Go for it, definately worth it and a great way to learn.....

as the previous poster ... including Spammie with the slapped forehead (!) .... says you can borrow a life vest to ease the nervousness....

    .......... AG

    Hiya,

Thanks for your replies. I was told he can snorkel with a life vest on even though he can%26#39;t swim which is good. He%26#39;s not frightened of the water at all and has been swimming with friends in a local pool. He stayed in the middle of the pool where the water was up to his chin. He can swim about 10m in that depth of water but won%26#39;t go into the deep end!

It will be a shame if he can%26#39;t experience the marine life in the Maldives so I%26#39;m hoping he%26#39;ll learn to swim better in the next few months.

AG- that was really nice of you to let someone borrow your snorkel and show them the ropes! I feel a lot more confident now that he%26#39;ll be able to snorkel with me even if it is only in 6ft deep water!

Did any of you do the sunset cruise on Kurumba?

    Club Faru

Read a few messages regarding which side of island is best, was wondering if there were any more tips on this subject. Which side is windiest, which is hottest, which has best views, which is quietest, which is farthest from bar, which has least mozzies!

    Club Faru

    Hi

The east side has the rooms which are less ';tired'; %26amp; are closer to the sea . This side gets less wind than the west %26amp; can get very, very hot! This is also the side where the ';infamous'; pipe runs from %26amp; so has the best snorkeling. However, this is the side that looks at the industrial island %26amp; some rooms are quite close to the bar that the entertainment is in. The west side does have more wind (all the better for drying your wet clothes) %26amp; the sun in the afternoon plus the gorgeous sunsets of course. This is the side where you can, if lucky, see dolphins in the distance! The rooms on this side are a little further from the sea(we are talking a difference of a few feet only). You can also watch the boats trundling to %26amp; fro between Male %26amp; other islands. The rooms to the left (looking out to sea) of the restaurant are very close to the entertainment bar- these are the ones most recently renovated after the tsunami. Those to the left-especially beyond the divecentre jetty- are very quiet- furthest from the bar but still close enough to stagger back to after indulging in all that AI drink! We stayed on this side both times we went to Faru %26amp; never had a problem getting a sunlounger, whatever time of day we decided to sunbathe, whereas on the east side, all the loungers were ';reserved'; quite early on.

Now- groundfloor versus first. The first floor rooms have a tin-type roof which can be very noisy when it rains(and it probably will!)-remember childhood holidays in a caravan? However, these will have the best views, %26amp; some are very close to treetops with roosting fruitbats- wonderful! Groundfloor rooms have a large terrace with an l-shaped stone ';bench'; with comfortable cushions-just right for a siesta. Also, they have the advantage of being able to step off the terrace straight onto the beach (either side of island)

As for mozzies-you%26#39;re probably better off on the windy side %26amp; keep the aircon cold-they don%26#39;t like it!

It%26#39;s not easy to request a room prior to going. We e-mailed both times we went- to no avail, but they did change us to the side we wanted when we checked in-just try to be first in the queue

    Les

    Club Faru

Sorry- wee typo. Meant to say rooms to the RIGHT -especially after the divecentre jetty- are very quiet.

I have booked this resort for July, I have been reading the reviews and it seems really good. I just wanted to ask about the dives and sunset fishing trip are good or just satisfactory? Also I havent been to a resort where there is no swimming pool before, do you miss it or is the sea better.

    Welcome to the forum,

I%26#39;m off to Biyadhoo for two weeks in May. Hoping to spend as much time underwater as possible! I%26#39;ve read a lot of reviews on TA and elsewhere on the web....all suggesting that the local diving and local snorkelling are superb. Here%26#39;s a link to the islands dive operation.

    http://www.dive-ocean.com/310_biy_center.aspx

    Guys,

The diving %26amp; snorkelling is top notch at both resort and local thilas. MY best diving experiences have been around Kandooma Thila/caves %26amp; biyahdoo%26#39;s house reef, this time of year the currents are really strong on some of the islands passages.. so play safe. but this means loads of fish life!!

There is a nice sized lobster cave on the house reef near passage 7 which is especially good at night and hundreds of string rays in the lagoon opposite passage 7 at night.

    Enjoy guys!!!

    Hi FU

I love Biyadhoo. It is a wonderful little island.

The first time I went to the Maldives I was worried about swimming in the sea - I am not a particularly strong swimmer - and so chose a resort with a pool. However, the sea was so warm and inviting that I never went near the pool. I have since been to another island that had a pool and again - never went near it.

Biyadhoo has a lovely large lagoon on the west side which is perfect for swimmnig around in.

    OD

We are going in September and are pretty rubbish, though qualified, divers ! Can you enter the water from the beach for the house reef dive? I am a bit tubby and the weight I need to keep me down is so much that I can%26#39;t stand with all my gear on, so would find it difficult to enter or exit the water fully geared up from a boat. I have a medical certificate to say it is OK for me to dive, but all I want to do is wander around a few metres down and take a look see.

    Hi Vivs,

No problem at Biyadhoo, there are 7 passage ways to the reef edge, so you can get the dive centre to bring the tanks down to %26#39;said entry point%26#39; and within 10 metres able to dive.

Passage 1 - has a small beach (located on the east of the island) starting at 1 swimming north to passage 7 (main jetty) and exiting on 6 is one of the best house reef dives I have done.

Usually possible in the morning as the currents swap the other way pm.

    Not as long as some posters on here - notably Nakatcha %26#39;the name says it all%26#39;

But travelled to the Maldives since April 1997 and tried to get a couple of holidays per year in (with wife) - I still remember the first visit - and that wow factor, it still feels the same every time I arrive ;)

Can you tell me if they have a house reef for diving or do you have to go on a boat all the time.

    Hi Scubawitch

no house reef although there is snorkling available around the island, hubby goes out for ages, there are also boats twice a day - journey about 20 mins to good sites.

    they accept Visa and Mastercard.

    Hi Maryanne 1979

Do you kn ow if its just Visa credit card or Visa debit as well?

    Hi Chakat,

They will accept any visa card, just tell your bank that you will be using it out of the country, Re booking a room, no point in contacting now as they only have numbers of people arriving , they dont get peoples names untill 2 weeks before arival, and it is only a request but they will if they can. Also best to ask for a room in a block not an individual room number, as this will give more scope / choice to allocate.

I would assume it%26#39;s any Visa but perhaps someone else can confirm. I paid with credit.

We are booked into fuana inn on the nearby island a few mins from the airport for $75 a night and they have aranged for us to have an afternoon at kuda bandos island for snorkelling, picnic etc for $100 incl the speedboat. Nice cheap option and the videos on youtube look great!

  • return flights

I%26#39;m planning to use Emirates flights if we go to the Maldives next April but I have a query about the flight times on the return leg.

The big kid in me wants a seaplane transfer and the outbound flight ends up in Male just after 8am so that will be fine for transfer. However, the latest return flight to Dubai is 09:55 which I think is too early for the return transfer by seaplane.

So I was wondering what happens on the return leg when the flights are not chartered direct. Do you have to get the latest seaplane transfer to Male and hang around in the airport until nearly 3 in the morning, which is the earliest flight to Dubai.

    return flights

    Hi Weirdfish,

If I understand your thread correctly, the Emirates flight from Male to Dubai is at 09.55??

If this is the case then all is well, every island resort in any atoll (apart from Gan / Seenu Atoll) will get you to the airport for an 08.45 flight let alone an 09.55 flight.

Most islands outside North male atoll run a policy of 1hr+ Male time to allow an extra hour of daylight which helps with seaplane transfers.

Usually the main issue with Emriates is that their return flight is at 2am, which means hanging around from around 6pm til check in at 11.30pm.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards

    Emu

    return flights

yeh, to clarify, the default flights are indeed in the middle of the night, however, I%26#39;m looking into staying in Dubai for a couple of nights on the way home so therefore could use a later flight to Dubai as there would be no need to sync up with the Dubai to Heathrow flight.

I was concerned that the seaplane transfers wouldn%26#39;t operate early enough for the later flights out of Male but from what you%26#39;ve said, they possibly do.

BTW, this all sounded a lot clearer in my head :-)

    Hi weirdfish,

To confirm then, they will definately connect with an 09.55am flight - I have done the Qatar 9am flight on three occasions from Ari %26amp; Baa atoll both journeys are 35mins in a seaplane, you will not miss that flight unless as stated in my previous post you are further afield in Gan.

about the addu atoll herathera island

    hi mand02

sorry to ask but when you have been can you tell me what you think when u come back as i have booked to go here 4 my honymoon june 2009. i can say that at the morment i am looking forward to going even though ive heard lots of bad thing about the island. ppl like the resort and say the staff are great, rooms clean and food good ect so at least thats good news. but dont like the island and say the beachers not as nice as others around the maldives but then again i heard that some place bleach the sand/ coral to make it so white. good luck try not to worry im sure you will make the most of it and if you see a part of the island you dont like then try not to pass it every day.

about the addu atoll herathera island

    Hi,

There is a good video link , posted by Sarah,C on 24th June 2007--Title Herathera island, it shows some of the rooms and a little bit of beach these are the good points and anyone came show the best side of anywhere, although it does not show the concrete or the walkways and the sand leaves a lot to be desired, Hope this helps.

    hi,

We have just come back from Handhufushi resort. WHAT A DISASTER!!! we arrived, to find that there were no sandy beaches, sat TV not working, no WIFI in rooms. The lagoon stank and had algae problems. Greeted at the resort with a map showing no swimming around the island. Half of the island was closed off due to low occupancy. They cant expect to improve the occupancy, while the island is unfinished. Some of the staff were very helpful , whilst alot were not interested. You need boots to walk on what beach they have got. If you want to see pictures post your e-mail address as i have loads. I have complained to our agent and asked for our money back. This is not like any of the islands in the north atolls that we have been to. Then to top it off we had a 24 hour delay on the way home.

marlin .. hoping you%26#39;ll post a review ? sorry you had such a miserable time . hoping the price was right , at least .

    Hi

I know there are post related to this topic for other islands but could not find it for this island. It says on the Kurumba website it accepts Visa %26amp; Master credit cards, would this include Visa debit cards?

we are heading off at the end of April,if anyone has tips on Kurumba, please let me know.

    Thanks

    Kurumba Payment types

Visa is visa, regardless of if it is debit or credit, they use the same authorisation machine.

The only visa that is different is Electron as this is not a direct payment method but takes 3 days to clear so would not work.

In the past few years I have always used Visa Debit with no issues, worth contacting your bank to let them know where you are going and dates, as I have had issues in the past with authorisation on payments over $1000.

    Kurumba Payment types

Hi we went to kurumba last year and paid our rather large bill by visa debit card without any problems. However, they do expect you to pay your room account every time it reaches 2000 u s dollars.

    What island and why (honeymoon)?

I%26#39;m still torn between what island to choose for our honeymoon. So I think the only way I can find out from your experiences what the best island for me to chose is to get some ideas off you all...

So with a budget of 3k(ish) for the two of us, for 2 weeks, AI or FB (we are T-total - but still drink loads of water/fruit juices/pop). A place that also has a swimming pool, has shallow water around the island, accommodation on the beach front, good snorkelling, perhaps a spa for a few treats, a little entertainment which island do you think would suit us best?

Also I know weather is unpredictable etc..but our wedding will be May 2010 next year and I%26#39;m torn between whether actually going for the honeymoon after the wedding (which would be ideal-but end up with rain) or just wait until the high season towards the end of the year going into 2011 and get our money%26#39;s worth. What do you think?? Also is it best to hold out for late deals rather than book in advance?

    Any advice appreciated :D

    Best wishes KP

    The Ultimate Resort!

    Hi,

I am looking for the Ultimate Resort (I%26#39;ve already found the Conrad, which in my opinion is pretty close to perfection, but would like to find a second one).

    Please keep in mind the following points;

    No budget restrictions

    Excellent snorkeling, proximity of reef

    Food quality excellent

    Service quality excellent

    Beauty of the Island

    Bungalow privacy

    Thank you.

    Pitch,

Four Season LG can match most of your requirement... this is not based on my own experience but staying to what i hear (i%26#39;m planning a trip there soon) seems very good.

Soneva Fushi has been rated quite well even.

  • If you had a choice between 5 resorts which one?

    Kuredu

    Meeru

    Komandoo

    Digghiri

    Anantara Dhigu Maldives

In general we want romantic but not boring.....ideally we would like a resort with a combination of the following:

    A lot of restaurants

We are both very social so we to be able to socialize with other english speaking tourists.

    A house reef

    A reputable dive center

    A Night fishing tour

    Surfing or windsurfing

    Parasailing

Cooking classes would be nice but are not a deal breaker.

    Thanks so much in advance!

If you had a choice between 5 resorts which one?

    Hi SDM,

I think the decision may be easier made if you know what your budget is as the choices given vary quite a bit. The only ones I can advise on are Kuredu and Komandoo. Kuredu is a larger island relatively speaking to some of the others. They have a wider choice of accommodation and various different boarding tiers, i.e. All Inclusive, Full Board, Half Board, B%26amp;B, and room only. They have three buffet style restaurants and 3 al a carte restaurants plus pool and snack bars. Komandoo is Kuredu鈥檚 sister island and it is tiny in comparison and only has 2 restaurants however it is easy enough to spend a week at one then move onto the other. Komandoo is more expensive than Kuredu. Kuredu has one of the largest dives/water sport centres so from what you鈥檝e mentioned Kuredu might suit you as it ticks all your boxes (not sure about the cookery classes though), although it鈥檚 bigger they have accommodation that will be quieter with the option of something a bit more lively if it takes your fancy.

If you had a choice between 5 resorts which one?

    Thanks for the info!

We are going to be there from 6/12-6/19.

Basically I%26#39;d like to spend no more than $300-$400 a night.

I already booked the flight using miles. It only cost us $228 for both us and the rest of the budget for the hotel, food, and activities is around $4000-$4200

    Hi SDM,

IMO I would avoid Kuredu %26amp; Meeru, they do not have great house reefs the later island needs a boat trip to access it and the coral is of poor standard.

Komandoo %26amp; Kuredu have had bad reviews of late, not becaue of the island but more the management issues (have a read of the reviews).

Digghiri does look a great little island but is 70% Italian occupancy so this might not suit you?

A better option for the larger type island would be Kuramathi (3 resorts in one) with lots of choice.

Alternatively one of the Universal resorts may be a good idea??

    http://www.universalresorts.com/

    Baros in particular

    Regards

    Emu

dhiggiri is beautiful , but very basic and almost all italian . there is only one restaurant and the food is not the greatest i ever had . i would go back to dhiggiri for a budget in-between vacation but you can%26#39;t compare it with komandoo , for example. diving is also lackluster around dhiggiri , but when you are spoiled from ari atoll , you%26#39;ll find all other atolls lacking.

aside from dhiggiri , the only other resort i would personally even consider visiting is komandoo.

Anantara is a beautiful resort for non-snorkelers and non-divers. there is no accessible housereef, a pretty dead huge lagoon and the dive center is on another island , so everytime you want to go there , you have to ask to have the boat brought . too inconvenient for me .

parasailing is thankfully not offered on many islands . never heard of cooking classes anywhere... maybe the conrad , which is wildly outside your budget .

not sure why you picked these particular islands , but neither of them is great for diving/snorkeling . would look for something in the ari atoll for sure .. of course your budget excludes a lot of options . maybe vilamendhoo

actually spammie the ';W'; offers cooking classes (also way outsides sonic deaths budget). Unfortunately I think that the Anantara Dhigu is also outside the 4K range. It looks like its about $5200 for 8 days in June under that B%26amp;B plan for their cheapest room.

You might want to take a look at www.mal-dives.com just for reference. At the top of the page it has a pulldown of resorts A-Z that is useful for bringing up info about different resorts. If you click on a resort it brings up a window that will give you more information about that resort including an estimated price if you want for when you want to go (I have never booked with these people and am in no way endorsing their agency for booking) but it useful for going through a lot of maldives resorts fairly quick and getting some info on resorts that people might suggest on this thread. If you really do live in LA I dont envy the trip that you will have to take to get to the Maldives. Last time I checked for somebody we were talking 35-40 hours of air time plus waiting time in airports to get from the west coast of the US. Seems like a nightmare for only 8 days.

upon re-reading what i wrote and before i get yelled at for being too negative about some of these resorts :)

.. what i meant to say is that as a pretty fanatical diver , a good housereef and good diving is a priority to me and not a single island on this list is an outstanding diver%26#39;s island. i would visit komandoo and revisit diggiri in a budget crunch, but none of this list is my first, second or tenth choice for good diving and snorkeling .

i am having trouble combining the OP%26#39;s wishlist into one island. most of the large islands are not great in the housereef department .. most of the smaller don%26#39;t offer parasailing and the like and of course the tight budget isn%26#39;t helping in the selection.

about the only suggestions i can come up with is filitheyo and vilamendhoo .. but nothing ticks all boxes . i think Rangali would fill the requirements but its way out of pricerange.

and skibum .. the W never fails to amaze me . lmao - but its lightyears outside the budget in discussion here , so not a topic we need to bother with . *grins

    Thanks folks.

The only reason I chose the 5 resorts was because they looked nice and I thought some of them might have some combination of what we%26#39;re looking for; read a good amount of reviews etc.

Emu, I checked out the Universal Resorts and I think Vellasaru might be exactly what I%26#39;m looking for. I can%26#39;t find any prices on excursions and diving though. Also the fact that there are no reviews for the place really freaks me out.....but it looks amazing.

    Skibum

Yeah we are coming from LA. It%26#39;s not so bad though we%26#39;re flying Singapore airlines and we get to get off the plane in Singapore for a day so it is not like we%26#39;re on a plane for 40 hours straight. In fact we have very little wait between flights and LA to Singapore is only 20 hours while Singapore to the Maldives in only around 7ish hours, so again not so bad. Also the Anantara Dhigu is only $2571 on expedia.

Does anyone know how Vellasaru scores with the criteria I originally discussed. (Of course take the stupid cooking course out of consideration) (This was my girlfriend%26#39;s idea. Really, who wants to learn to cook on vacation when you are only there a week?)

    Hi SDM,

There is data on Velassaru under %26#39;Laguna Beach Resort%26#39; since laguna it has been upgraded and refurbished and is due for a %26#39;soft opening%26#39; as mentioned in other threads for the 8th March - watch this space??!!

Angsana Ihuru gives you everything you want inc cooking, but only has a FB option with one restaurant, it is however my favourite island.

    Regards

    Emu

    Thanks again Emu

I haven%26#39;t had a lot of time to peruse the forums but I see what you mean about Vellasaru. (For some reason the name reminds me of Velociraptor) I will keep my eyes glued to this forum regarding that place.

Do you know if the old Vellasaru had a very good house reef or not?

Additionally, and this may seem like a dumb question, but is Angsana Velavaru the same as Angsana Ihuru?

    Hi SDM,

No it does not have a great reef! and Ihuru is different to velavaru.

  • Protecting Your Feet

    Hi Guys,

I%26#39;ve read many reviews stating that you need to wear beach shoes/trainers to protect your feet from the sharp coral.

I was wondering what would be the best. Pimpsils - whereby there cover your entire feet or sandels - whereby the sides of your feet are open and exposed like these - http://www.littlewoods.com/rf/p.do/nano-sandals?Ntx=mode+matchallpartial%26amp;SNtt=nano%26amp;groupId=543785653%26amp;Nu=this_product%26amp;SNtk=littlewoods_search%26amp;Np=1%26amp;SN=103+85%26amp;Ntt=543785653%26amp;D=543785653%26amp;Ntk=group_search%26amp;Dx=mode%2bmatchall%26amp;thisprod=543785653%26amp;N=103+85%26amp;Nty=1%26amp;Mis_item_id=15%26amp;Mis_item_loc_id=1%26amp;product=543785653

Many thanks for your advice in advance.

    SJ

    Protecting Your Feet

You need something called aquashoes. Dive shops have them, also Land End and your island shop defo will. They are inexpensive. I would not recommend open sandals as you need protection all around your foot - the tops and sides can easily get cut if you go over on a loose bit of coral.

    Wid

    Protecting Your Feet

    Hi SJ

Firstly, one should never walk on Coral. This will kill the tiny polyps that make up the Coral Skeleton. Even touching Coral can damage the animal.

If you refer to walking on dead coral rubble, then Aqua Shoes are ideal and can cost as little as £7.

We%26#39;ve visited various islands in The Maldives and never had the cause to wear anything on our feet whilst on the beach or in the water.

Last year we got married in The Cook Islands on Aitutaki and knew beforehand that we would need Aqua Shoes because their beaches are very course with lots of dead coral everywhere.

The vast majority of the beaches in The Maldives are like talcum powder, so no footware at all is needed.

Light sandals for use in the evening come in handy for walking to the restaurants and bars, as often tree roots stick up from the ground and can cause you stumping your toe or spiking the base of your foot!

But overall, you really don%26#39;t need them.

Paying the £22 for the ones you link to seems a lot to pay, when you could get some ones like these from Ebay as an example...........

    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Adults-Aqua-Beach-Shoes-SIZE-9-Swimming-Wetsuit_W0QQitemZ190255647700QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_SportingGoods_Wetsuits_WatersportsClothing_CA?hash=item190255647700%26amp;_trksid=p3286.c0.m14%26amp;_trkparms=72%3A1683|66%3A2|65%3A12|39%3A1|240%3A1318

    Hope this helps :-)

    Roger

That%26#39;s strange that you have had no need for them - maybe it depends on the island but we certainly needed them both times we went, for the loose bits of dead coral in the lagoon. All it takes is one cut from a small bit of razor sharp piece hidden under the sand to ruin your holiday.

I%26#39;d play safe if I were you SJ.

    Wid

    Hi SJ,

I agree with Roger in that I have never used shoes for walking around an island/beach/sea - but that is just because I do not feel the need.

I do however wear boots in the water as they go hand in hand with my half foot fins and make for easy entry exit over the dead coral in the shallows.

My advice would be to purchase the cheapest %26#39;fashionable%26#39; reef shoes you can get, just for peace of mind. You may not need them, that will depend on the island, but worth having all the same.

    Regards

    Emu

just back from reethi beach and although a no shoes island was glad of my speedo aqua shoes for that quick dip in the sea, yes for walking along the beach, great on shoes needed but there is bits of dead coral in the shallows, so unless you have rock hard soles I would say bring aqua shoes.

    Julie

sorry, no shoes needed for the walk along the beach .

Thanks for all your input. I think I will get the ones that were suggested in the link above, they seem adequate and cheap.

PS I am going to Chaaya Dhonveli Island in March 2010 - shame its so far away.

mixed bag on this one.over the past trips i have seen visitors with quite bad cuts caused by coral and things other folks have left behind.Last visit something cut through my flip within 1mm of my foot.was glad i was wearing something.Individual choice i suppose.

    cfc

I assume you mean in when you were in the water in the lagoon?

I have never worn anything on my feet except perhaps flipflops to walk around the island - and most often nothing. My hubby has to wear tennis shoes all the time %26#39;cos of an ankle/foot problem (poor him) but there was no way whatsoever we could have gone into the water by our romm in Vilamendhoo without aquashoes. There was just SO much dead coral up the Eastern end of the island.

    Wid

    Hiya,

We%26#39;re going to Kurumba in Aug and are definitely going to take aqua shoes with us to wear in the water, hopefully we won%26#39;t need to wear them on the beach- I want the feeling of soft sand running through my toes; don%26#39;t want to have to wear aqua shoes on the beach.

I%26#39;ve searched on the net, you can get some really cheap and nice looking ones (from as little as £5 a pair). Look on the Speedo site aswell.

    Handufushi- Fihalhoi, Dilema

As some may know am due to go to Fiha in May.

Water Bungalow --FB X 2 weeks for a little over 3K.- working on current prices we will have to have a rough costing of about 1.5k for drinks , tips and a couple of extras, this is taking into account the addons for surcharges and service. We chose the island for the snorkeling and natural charm.

The dilema is for just 3k we can go to Handufushi -AI for the same 2 weeks on the same flight, jacuzie beach front villa.

    Just a few questions???

    1) Is 2weeks too long on 1 island??

    2) Is surfing free on the Island we have been reading about charges on some of the Islands?

    3) Which Beach Villa%26#39;s would you recommend, we have heard the 200%26#39;s are best???

4)Are drinks free from the surfers viewing bar?

    5) Some poor pics of the beach villa%26#39;s how did you find the villa%26#39;s

    6) Some resorts offer free upgrade to Water Villa%26#39;s for honeymooners--is this a possibility??

7)What about the snorkeling?? Good our do you have to go on trips..

Reading the link above it seems that the reef can get over crowded with surfers to?? If surfing is priority then Dhonveli would be a better option, as they limit the reef to 25 surfers at one time.

not sure i think that they charge you.

4)no the drinks are chargeable rom the surf bar.you only get your all inclusive drinks from the beach bar and main bar

5)found the villas fine a bit basic but kept clean

6)don%26#39;t know for honeymooners they normally charge about £150 to upgrade

    Tipping in US $ ?

Now that we are all in a credit crunch/economic downturn/recession, is it still wise,in particular us Brits to tip in DOLLARS? Is the local currency a better rate, which I believe can be exchanged at Male airport? A comparison at current US rates could make some staff better off than those building olympic stadiums in London.Your comments are appreciated.

    Tipping in US $ ?

tips are commonly given un USD . that is not a matter of wisdom but of local custom.

it is easiest to get a stash of ones , fives and tens from your local bank before leaving .

to figure out what you are going to need ... minimum usually is : all luggage porters about 2 $ per piece ; roomboy , waiter and barmen expect min. 10$ a week or a couple $ per serve ..anyone else doing any service for you (i.e. bringing cold towels on the beach, etc) usually gets a couple of dollars per service .

ovcerall , we usually figure on about 500 $ for tips for 14 nights.

in my humble opinion .. those of us who can still afford lavish vacations despite the economic dowturn , will probably not go hungry over the exchange rate on a few bucks in a country where tips are the largest part of the staffs income .. smiles

    enjoy your trip

    Tipping in US $ ?

As spammie says US$ is the main currency and that includes when on day trips to male and local tourist islands.

How much to take depends on your generosity.

    Sg

yes.. SG is totally right .. i forgot to mention that you%26#39;ll need USD not only for tipping but for any cash transaction outside your resort .. male .. airport .. fishing village trips .. they all use dollars . i doubt you will find the rufiya accepted in most places.

    Hi Langolass

Yes - the mighty greenback is still the currency of choice. I had to order some more today and the rate was $1.35 to the pound! Last time I bought some it was virtually 2 to the pound!

As others have suggested, take small denomination bills.

    OD

Just to add on something Spammie said above, re staff expecting tips, anyone who expects gets nothing from us, tips are a gratuity for service, poor service gets nothing .

On another note, we always tip the boat not the individual when on trips--fishing -Diving, we also tip the kitchen box for the backroom staff, we give extra to those that go out of there way to help or do extra and we never tip people in ties, we also leave something for the beach cleaners outside our room , this often gets fresh flowers being left and or the odd coconut. SOME OF THE ISLANDS ARE NOW ALSO ACCEPTING Euros

    Rumpole

agree with rumpole about making sure to tip the ';unseen staff'; .. most islands have a special box for the laundry / kitchen/ maintenance workers and the like .

have to disagree with the european concept that a tip is an extra gratuity for extra special service .

you are not in europe , where base salaries cover the worker%26#39;s needs nicely , but in a culture where tipping is considered a moral obligation and makes up most of the service staffs compensation.

for one , being considered a bad tipper comes back to haunt you in numerous ways .. you can stand on your self righteous european legs and save 5 bucks but wait longer for service , get accidentally forgotten and a multitude of other little issues that make your stay less then pleasant ... or you can spend the fiver and get every perk known to mankind .. extra service , extra smiles , extra little favors that really go a long way towards a dream vacation. we have never regretted a single dollar tipped in the maldives .

second .. i simply do not think its fair that we , as guests in a country , bring our western attitudes with us and consider ourselves ever so superior because of them .. no, a tip is not considered a gratuity for above and beyond good service in muslim countries (or even in the united states) .. by proudly not tipping , one puts oneself on ethically shaky legs (in local understanding) and as much as the non-tipper feels righteous about not doing so , the staffmember is righteously annoyed about the slight and feels justified in carrying a grudge.

besides .. we can all afford a few dollars or we wouldn%26#39;t be in the maldives .. but in a 3rd world country , that sum goes a long way towards feeding and educating that staffmembers children .. so i am happy to give a little .

I agree with Spammie to some degree, but I don%26#39;t think we should be morally obliged to tip regardless of the level of service we receive. I am a generous tipper, especially when in countries where you know tips make a huge difference. However, I wouldn%26#39;t give tips to a memeber of staff who was rude or provided a poor level of service. They should be earned, and in the majority of cases in resorts like this, they are.

I would never withold tips if a member of staff wasn%26#39;t exceptional, but on the other hand, I wouldn%26#39;t reward poor service either.

ok.. i agree with weegie ... if someone had been downright rude or caused me problems , i wouldn%26#39;t pay for the pleasure either .. but i haven%26#39;t had that happen in the maldives - not ever , depite numerous trips to different islands.

i guess what i am trying to say : basic , decent service qualifies for a fair tip . above and beyond service gets a better tip .

    i would only withold a tip for exeptionally bad service .. as long as i get the service i ';expect'; , i respect the ';right'; of the staffmember to ';expect';

due compensation in form of a small gratuity.

I think - no i know thats what i said in my post , glad i went out and came back but i still reply,

What a very Arogant and Sanctimonious, posting by Spammie.

I know where i am and where i am going and where ive been, i do not need a lecture on Tips.

    Rumpole

    didn%26#39;t lecture you , Rumpole .. just disagreed :)

    smile a little :)

Just back from a fab week in Reethi any questions?

Great to hear you loved it, we fly out 2 weeks on Saturday, and we are all stupidly excited now...

Best spa treatment for my wife on her birthday?

Just back from a fab week in Reethi any questions?

oh my goodness...dying to read your review!! I wonder if you will get round to it before I go... leaving in 4 days!!!!!!!

I think I have asked and read about all the questions I need to know... but would love to know anything particular you recommmend we dont miss out on?

    Hi Julie

Glad to hear you enjoyed Reethi, cant wait to read your review. Will you be going again?

    Lonny

Glad you had a great time. Flying out to Egypt tomorrow but desperately wish it was to Reethi!. Look forward to reading your review when I get back.

    for spatulala,

we had the adam and eve massage which was a foot spa

a discovery massage and a refresher facial, all was great but I think next time I would just go for the refresher facial which was excellent. We were given a 20% voucher for the spa although it didnt cover the ';spa packages'; such as the adam and eve but if you go for

    one treatment it does.

    for lynn1963

Because I change my handbag to go on hols the one thing I forgot was a pen which you need as soon as you land in Male so you can fill out the landing card.

If you would like to try the gym you will need some trainers or deck shoes.Wish I had taken some.

As for clothes, I took to much evening clothes but was glad I had 5 swimsuits and cover ups because I went swimming morning afternoon and early evening, you tend to need showers after because the coral gets everywhere

and they do like you to be dry when your sitting in the restaurant.

If you are like us you will take lots of photos we were glad

we took a memory stick, usb cable and the batt charger we used the computer in the reception to down load photos on the stick.

It was the best hols we have had and hope to go again, I am sure your have a great time. Wish I was back there.

    Julie

We returned last week. Without doubt the best holiday we%26#39;ve had. The only negative comments I have and believe me I%26#39;m being very picky, but they may be of interest. Beware if you choose the ';warm'; stone treatment at the spa. The stones turned out to be far too hot for my wife and actually spoiled the treatment. Two other people we spoke with had a similar experience.

I had some aggravation being asked to sign for things I never had and one persistent waiter who was far too enthusiastic for me to always sit where he wanted. Unfortunately I had to have a word to get this sorted. Compared to other places though the service is fantastic and I%26#39;m prepared to believe I was unlucky . At the time there seemed to be no hard and fast rule when you sign for what you have had. With some guys when I asked to sign I was told no problem wait until next time, with others as is the instruction, I was asked to sign straight away As I was AI I never gave any of this much thought until the problem with the wrong bills. By the way, I%26#39;m not impressed with the manger Thomas who may have thought he handled the situation well but he

actually made things worse as far as I%26#39;m concerned.

Finally if you want a laugh after a few beers, walk along the beach in the dark with a torch. You will be amazed how many tiny crabs are darting out of your way.

glad to hear you had a nice time what is the beach down by the watersports and the bungalows on the corner like now are there still sand bags there is there any beach there?

great tips!!! I have taken your advice and just placed a pen in my passport bag.

Have 4 costumes packed, but your note has inspired me to go get another (I just needed an excuse to justify to myself even more shopping so thank you!!!)

cant believe its so close now - after all this waiting. Picked up the 200 dollar bills we will use for tips today - how did you get on with the tipping?

    lynn1963

Tipping was easy they have a box for the kitchen staff (about 10$) in the middle of the buffet and a box just outside the restaurent for the waiters (about 10$.)I got the feeling they wanted you to do it this way to make it fairer for all the staff rather than tipping your waiter only. We also tip the lady leaf sweeper 3$ who came by our villa very day. The room boy we give 10$ it really up to you, the rep that was there said these amount were fine for a weeks stay. We did a discovery dive which was great 120$ each and the turtle tour 35$ each (although we didnt see any turtles)but fun anyway so we tip the dive school 30$.

just a another tip if you like tea ,we took a travel kettle and some dried milk for tea in the morning.

    willowbath

still sandbags there, we were put in a deluxe villa 103

just where you said for our first night, the villa was fine but the out look not so good, but pleased when we were put in our std villa (which is what I had booked)163 which was great I could look out to the sea though a gap while sitting in bed with a cup of tea.

The Beach - Chaaya Dhonveli Island.

    Hello.

Does anyone know what the beach is like at this resort and what part of the Island is the best for the beach.

I think I will be staying in beach bungalow 222 on the right hand side of the lagoon (near the water villas.

    Many thanks.

The Beach - Chaaya Dhonveli Island.

    Hi SJ

Have a look at the following website and get yourself signed in as a member:

    http://www.chaayamaldives.co.uk

I was directed there when I asked a question about Dhonveli on this site. It is well worth viewing, has lots of info and photo%26#39;s of all 3 of the Chaaya resorts. Will probably answer lots of the questions that you have already asked on TA. We are off to Dhonveli in November this year.

The Beach - Chaaya Dhonveli Island.

    Hi SJ

The Island is very small and crescent shaped, the beach runs along the inside of the curve and so is sheltered in a lagoon which is lovely to swim and snorkel in, there is some rough coral on the beach so it is advisable to take water shoes, we were there last September and are going again in May so that should tell you how much we loved it there

Let me know if you have any more questions

    Cinnamon Island

    Hi

Has anyone been to Cinnamon Island - Think its quite a new resort - Can anyone tell me more about it

    Thanks

    Cinnamon Island

reviews tend to like the island/food/spa /pool but criticize the beach. the island (alidhoo) is not protected by a lagoon and the sand is described as very mixed with lots of broken coral and apparently , swimming is impossible and not even the watervillas have water access.

the (german)divecenter is reported as good but the divespots as unexciting

you%26#39;ll find some frank photos here: malediven.net/Bilder/鈥ndex.htm

    Cinnamon Island

Thanks for that - I hadn%26#39;t realised it was called Allidhoo. The accomodation looks really nice, and I%26#39;m not too worried about the lagoon as I don%26#39;t go in the water that much. Has anyone stayed there recently and do you know which tour operators go there.

    Cheers

    Hi Julie

It%26#39;s right in the north of the Maldives an internal flight (not a sea plane)from Male to Himandoo and then 30 minutes speed boat from there. I%26#39;m surprised you%26#39;re going to the Maldives (and Sharma I see) if you don%26#39;t go in the water

I love to look at the ocean and lie in the sun. I am not a very good swimmer and only snorkelled for the first time in Ellaidhoo two years ago, and then again last year. I loved it but didn%26#39;t go out of my depth and the sea had to be really calm. I am addicted to the Maldives islands, the people and everything else about it as everyone else is on this forum. I am going to Egypt this year in June, mainly for the weather as it can be changeable in the Maldives at this time. Not sure if I will snorkel as I believe its deep water so I maybe out of my comfort zone - Its also one of those places that I%26#39;ve always wanted to visit. We will be going back to the Maldives (hopefully around Christmas time again) and fancied doing a two centre (Ellaidhoo %26amp; Alidhoo) if it was possible so would welcome any info on Cinnamon / Alidhoo if anyone has any.

    books to read

hi all, i tend to only really read when on holiday, so anyone got any good tips for a read, i like a bit of horror/ sci fi / or odd type of stuff, i am taking 2 books, the birthing house and the shack, so along those lines any recomendations, you will have to be quick iwe fly on sunday , YIPPEE, chris

    books to read

Beach Babylon by Imogen Edwards-Jones would be an interesting book to read while you are on a Maldivian holiday.

    books to read

    Hi ideyboy!

Last year when I was at the maldives I read ';The Chemistry of Death'; by Simon Beckett. It%26#39;s about serial killers, forensic... - scary ;-)

I can also recommend his followers ';Written in bone'; and ';Whispers of the dead';. They are really page-turners!!

    Have a great holiday!

    Nicole

Like you I only read when on holiday (apart from stuff to do with work). However I find that the Maldives is the only place I have ever been where I find it utterly impossible to get through a book. So I now only take magazines, especially ones with lots of lovely pictures like National Geographic, BBC wildlife mag, dog magazines and the like. They can be %26#39;drip read%26#39; more easily between bouts of snorkelling, eating, drinking at the beach bar and general drooling.

Funny that. Wonder if anyone else finds the same.

    Wid

i am with you , Wid - i still take books but can%26#39;t concentrate on reading . too busy looking around. never get tired of watching fish among the coral under the villa .. sunshine reflecting on the water .. a boat passing by .. scanning the water for dolphin .. i just sit there and enjoy everything around me . that book will still be there when i get back :)

Gets dark early, so if not drinking or doing anything else, may want to read in evening. Harlen Coben writes good thrillers, that you cant put down - then wish you had, so that you still had it to read! Dont forget to leave your books in the library at reception once you have read them. Vilamendhoo had quite a good selection last year.

    Jan

    Jan

';If not drinking or doing anything else'; when it gets dark?!!!!!!! .... no, I won%26#39;t go on.....

    Wid

lol .. well.. we don%26#39;t drink and there is light under the bungalow , so i can still watch the fish and the stars are amazing without the lightpollution we are used to. :)

If you like SF then The Snow by Adam Roberts could be an interesting contrast when in a hot location! I%26#39;m taking Greg Bear%26#39;s new novel City at the End of Time with me on holiday this year.

No water bungalows with lights under them in Vilamendhoo, so when it gets dark it really is dark, except along the jetty and some of the walkways - so you just MIGHT want to read at night!! :)

cheap resort nr Male for 2 nights

My plane got cancelled from Singapore and I have been left with 2 extra days before we go to Reethi in July. Instead of staying 2 more nights we thought we might try another island close to male. Are there any cheap resorts that would pick up from the airport and boat transfer at 10pm that anyone can reccommend??

cheap resort nr Male for 2 nights

    yeah yeah whatever.

    Anyone with a serious answer?

cheap resort nr Male for 2 nights

two nights makes it a bit tricky as many have a minimum stay , but club faru is very close and cheap. you might give them a try .

    Hi,

Why don%26#39;t you try ';Club Faru'; or ';Full Moon'; as they are very close to the Male%26#39; airport.

Btw, could you also tell me your flight date (Old %26amp; New). I also booked SQ for my Maldives trip on September - October which I%26#39;m not sure now they will still keep flying daily.

    Thanks,

old date was 28th july, replaced by 27th

would faru work out cheap for 2 nights? embudu??

    suggest getting quotes from both

geez Spammie you mean you aren%26#39;t Mike%26#39;s travel agent? (smiles)

Mike you asked what the cheap resorts were that were close to the airport. You got the answer. If you want to know how cheap then email the resort or call them. Right now we dont even know if they will take you for only two nights.

sorry to repeat questions. Have emailed both places twice and received nothing back. Just trying to get a rough idea to see if we can afford these places

Mike ... two possible reasons ... a) time moves a bit slower in the maldives and as a 2 night guest , you might not be top priority for a reservations manager putting out fires or

    b) they don%26#39;t do 2 night stays and decided to blow you off .

i%26#39;d call .. fastest and easiest way .

i did a price check on the airport hotel (hulhule island hotel) for you and come up with 590 $ for 2 nights in july .

  • what to do in Male

Hi, can anyone tell me if you can do anything in Male we dont fly untill 2 in the morning and have just been told we check out at noon and fly there at 4pm we are travelling with my daughter who is 9yrs so it sounds like a long day ,thanks John

    what to do in Male

a lot of people in your situation get a room at the airport hotel to have a place for a nap , shower, changing clothes and storing bags .. take the boat into Male at your leisure for dinner and a long look around .

    what to do in Male

Can you book the hotel when you are in the Maldives or is it best to book this end we are going to Kuredo so I dont know if it is an option to get the boat ,cheers John

Most UK Tour Opearators offer either the Airport Hotel (Hulhule Island Hotel) or a Malé Hotel at a Day Use rate for late night flight passengers. You could prebook this from Uk or else while on the Kuredu. Hulhule Island Hotel is the best option for convenience, food options etc and also has a free boat every hour to/from Malé, about 15mins journey - but is the more expensive than Malé hotels.

I recommend Mookai if you choose a Malé Hotel as it right beside the seafront and within easy walking distance of the airport ferry jetty.

    Absolutely overwhelmed ......... Help!

Thinking of going to Maldives 3rd May just for 7 days (29 years wed!) and after reading the forums I am absolutely overwhelmed!! Would like half board somewhere quiet with a budget of about £3000. Any ideas where to start!! I am reading now is not a good time to book. I was hoping to get a reasonable deal but feel a bit mesmerised by it all to be honest!

Definitely feel the Maldividan virgin!! Thanks in advance.

    Absolutely overwhelmed ......... Help!

    Hi Barb,

In reality i wpold say all the Maldives resorts are quiet in there own way some are just larger than others,Any time is a good time for the Maldives , just a chance of some rain when you are planning to go.

Dont know how you want to go as in charter / scheduled-book direct, but look at First Choice web site this will give you ideas of islands available and rough costings, then work out what is important to you, as in type of accomodation good snorkeling or not things like tat- do you want a pool short / long journey on arrival boat or seaplane transfer.

These points will help us to help you more.

    Rumps

    Absolutely overwhelmed ......... Help!

that week will be heavily booked as most islands lower their prices considerably on may 1st for the beginning of the low season - and chances are that the weather is still ok.

suggest to get offers for which islands are still bookable. that should narrow it down some . just bring that shortlist back here and we can help you decide.

you might also give us an idea what activities you are looking forward to. if snorkeling is a priority , then you want an island with a good accessable housereef, for example .

once you work out your expectations , finding your dream island will be easy .

Hi also have a look on mark%26#39;s travel they have some excellent offers on at the moment and again as said previously it will give you an idea of what and where, come back with a short list

    regards susie

Thanks for advice. I have been looking and quite like the look of Angsana or Baros. You guys know what you are talking about and so would value your opinions on either of these two. Thank you. Getting excited about booking now!

    Hi Barb,

Angsana Ihuru is amazing, and to date my favourite island, currently Kuoni have 7nts FB for £1588 going in June.

    Worth giving them a ring!!

    http://www.kuoni.co.uk/offers/offers.shtml

    Regards

    Emu

May is usually a very nice month - it is considered to be Low Season but in my experience it hardly ever rains, the benefits being that the prices are usually rock bottom. When looking for a Maldivian Island I always think its best to start a list of what IS and what ISNT important to YOU. Kind of thingsto consider...

House Reef (for snorkeling) or Lagoon island

Large island or small and more intimate

    Restuarant and dining options,

Room comfort (all rooms are with air con and usually meet your every day needs) - some are very luxurious indeed.

    Do you dive?

Then you consider the pricing and there are many May deals with the major UK operators, Thomas Cook, First Choice, Monarch Holidays, etc

Should you not choose an All Inclusive deal try to find out prices of drinks etc beforehand, drinking water (as well as other tipple) can be expensive in Maldives!

Hope this is of some use, enjoy
