Peaceful Island

Hi, we are both in our early sixties and looking for a peaceful, beautiful island, with good snorkelling, lots of birdlife, and a choice of restaurants. We can%26#39;t seem to find a peaceful island that has more than one restaurant, we also want a water villa. Any suggestions.

To get a choice of restaurants you have to go to one of the larger islands, thus losing the peacfull side of your wants to a degree.

There is not a lot of bird life on any of the islands, its limited to Crows-Herons, the odd visitor and although not a bird but they do fly';Fruit bats'; The island i am thinking about is Sun Island although the largest it has the room to diperse people, the only time you see people is at meal times and in the main bar of an evening, it has a number of restaurants and some good snorkeling of the jetty by the Italian Restaurant and they do have water Bungalows. another is Fihalhohi although not the choice of restaurants it has everything else, but i feel you may have to rob Peter to get Paul if you get my drift.

I am sure others will come back with there recomendations, but hope this helps.

Ps may be worth a look at Meeru --Angana--Elliadhoo--Rangeli--Kuredu.

Us we are going to Makunudu (by the way if someone have extra info on it they are more than welcome). Some island, only 36 bungalow nice snorkeling privacy and quiet ... but there no OWB.

What about Nikka and Mirihi? Think about them.

agree with rumpole .. once you have several restaurant , you lose the quiet part . might have to decide which is more important to you .

as already mentioned ... birdlife is not going to be impressive . these are tiny islands that don%26#39;t have enough resources to support much of a bird population. you might have to do with flying foxes which are winged and facinating to watch .. does it matter if they don%26#39;t have feathers ? :)

mirihi (main and one specialty restaurant) .. angaga .. kandolhu .. komandoo

busy but multiple restaurants :

Rangali Conrad , Kuredu, Sun island

Have a look at Thulhagiri,this island seems to tick all your box%26#39;s although I don%26#39;t know if it has more than one restaurant,there are different board basis so might be a possibility of more than one restaurant. The island seems to have wild budgerigars!

depending on when the trip is planned for , thulagiri is out .. they are still building waterbungalows and a new spa and to my knowledge haven%26#39;t reopened.

its true that thulagiri has free flying budgies .. depends if the interest is to just watch anything with feathers flying around or serious ornithology .. being that those budgies are by no means indigenous to the maldives .

they are the offspring of an accidentally released pair several years ago (or so i have heard the story) and they turned out to do quite well as long as they are being fed .. being that they can%26#39;t really leave, the island functions as a big birdcage and the tourists enjoy them ... but they are not a self sustaining , natural population.

anyhow .. having added all those waterbungalows just raised thulagiris population density quite a bit .. i would imagine that it will be in the marginally quiet category afterwards , sadly .

One other comment on thulagiri. This may or may not be a problem for you depending on how sensitive to noise you are but some people complain about airport noise. Its about 12-14 KM from the airport so the planes are pretty high up by that time but depending on the departures and approach directions on a given day it is possible to hear some jet noise. Again if you are used to city noise or planes flying over in the UK you probably wouldn%26#39;t notice it.
