Next month we are on a cruise ship calling at Male for a day - any ideas on what to see /do would be appreciated. Boat trips?
A Day in Male
There are not particularyl any boat trips that you can do, so you are best to spend the day on Male. Best places to see are the fruit market, veg market, Sultan%26#39;s Park,President%26#39;s Palace, %26amp; gold topped Mosque. There are cafes scattered around. The best thing to see is the fish market where the local fish are landed and laid on the (bloody!) floor to be sold! Best time for this is mid-afternoon. You are advised to use the local guides who will take you round and see the sights. It is also possible to take a walk round the entire island which takes an hour .... there are shops but they do pester you to go in, just a polite ';no'; will suffice; ensure you take some water, it is very very humid on Male.....
When landing on Male, the fish market is on the right if you walk along the seafront. The fruit and veg market are also in this area. The Sultanls Park is straight ahead, so are the Mosque %26amp; shops, and the cafes are located on the seafront if you walk to the left. Do note there will not be any Malls and big shops.....

A Day in Male
A day is way 2 long-4 hours would be enough,
you could hire a local Dohnie (boat) and have a couple of hours snorkeling and or fishing.

Hi CW
The typical island excursion to Male is usaully done in 1/2 a day. There isn%26#39;t a huge amount to see.
This link takes you to one of the Maldives tourism sites and might give you a few ideas.

Hi CW
As another thought, there is the Maldives Whale Submarine, which does regular dives during the day and sometimes at night.
I haven%26#39;t done the Maldives one but I did the equivalent in Barbados and it was brilliant.

Active girl,
I took it for granted they would not be hanging around Male.

Hi - great to read a review on Male. Could you tell me if there is much in the way of Handicraft shopping and if so what sort of things do they make?
Is there any cafes or restaurants or major hotels that would be ok to dine in?
It seems very pricey to go for a day trip from the islands. When going to the Airport, do you go via Male or do you go straight to the airport island? Am i correct in thinking that they are 2 different islands/atolls?
Cheers Robyn

Male was a disappointment. We had planned spend a day - I think we spent 2 hours, max. Saw the markets, walked about the town....held our breath a lot. The gas emissions are horrendous. It was prettier from the sea and sky. After 10 days on another island, Male was a jolting awakening back to reality.
Didn%26#39;t see any handicrafts, but you%26#39;ll need to ask the experts -- activegirl, probably! :-)
Yes, the airport and Male are two different islands. Not far, but you have to ferried.
Sorry for the not-so-enthusiastic post. :-(
